Work Placement

OMG I am so happy right now, after this morning lesson on work placements and where people want to do theres i wanted to stay local and knew that most of the ones in london were out of the question because of accomadation, but luckily someone brought up about a bridal shop; Mojgan that has just opened in Winton, so i decided after uni to try my luck. And omg it was so big and beautiful in there i had to wait half an hour for the owner to come back but when she did she literally asked me what i was doing and i told her that i was a student studying fashion at AUCB and that i'd like some work experience between 10th and 21st May.
She said she didn't usually take on that many people as is only main bridal store in the area but has but me done to do experience with her=]=]=]=] she said that i'll learn alot and i think i'll be helping make wedding dresses as it is in-house. She seems quite strict but i guess you have to be and i really think i am gain alot from this experience. This is a dream of mine i cannot believe it and how easy it was to get, can't wait to say at uni on thurs i'm soooo excited=]=]=]

The lady who owns it actually went to AUCB and did the same course!!

Looking at fabrics

Today was actually quite interesting, Karen had us looking more at materials and what they are made of such as clothes are made up of a number of materials, to make them either soft, hard, stretchy or rigid. We also looked at care labels inside clothing and it is amazing at how much people don't follow what the labels says, we established that it was there so there is nothing on the companys head.
To start with we did an exercise to show all the different things of fabric:
  • Warp and Weft
  • Bias and straight of grain, selvage, weight, size
  • Stretched, bonded, knitted, woven, blended, fibres
  • Patterned, bleached, aged, faded, dyed, tye dye, print, embrodiered, batik
  • organic, natural, man made, techno fabrics, hydrophobic, water souble
  • Jersey, Twill, Cotton, Lace, yarns/wools

Before Easter it all got going

Week 22
On monday i had my toile review, i was really relieved to have been able to finish my dress and actually come to quite like, as i was quite worried that it wasn't going to look right. All i want to do to my actual final piece is to shorten the dress as it didn't look young and sexy, i would also like to bone and line it as i don't have any straps on the dress so boning would be the best way for it to stay up.
Thursday i went in for a bit to work on altering my pattern, then broke up for easter for a well deserved break=]

Week 21
Was only in for wednesdays buying and merchandising where i managed to hand in my assessment early as i didn't want it to get in the way of my toile and preparation for toile review. So Thursday i had all day to make and finish my toile. Whilst constructing my garment i kept changing my mind whether i wanted it as a dress or two pieces, but whilst pinning the two separate pieces i decided it would looked better as one so went with my original idea of a dress, once it was all sewn together i actually liked it.

Week 20
Having a bit of difficulty with my design i used a manikin and tape to work out my design on there to see where i want my seam lines or details to go. I decided in the end not to use a pattern block but get the pattern from the manikin this proved a better way and gave the shape i wanted.

Week 19- 4/3/10

Today we to pattern cut are designs, this meant a lot of figuring out and i realised that mine is going to need a lot of work as the pattern will be difficult for the effect i want to create.
